Cycling in the winter can seem like a daunting prospect but with the right knowledge and preparation you can ensure you stay safe on the roads and continue to enjoy your cycling.
Here are our top tips to remember when hitting the roads this winter:
Clothing for Your Bike This Winter
As the nights get darker earlier it’s even more important to be as visible as possible on your bike with the correct hi-vis clothing. You also need to wear enough layers to keep warm and wear eye protection to avoid being struck by anything that could fly up from the road surface.
Pre-cycle Checks
Keeping your bike in good condition is key to staying safe on the roads. Regularly cleaning your bike can prevent a build up of any harmful deposits that can damage parts of the bike. Check the tyres for any build-ups that could lead to punctures as well as the entry and exit points of cables and ensure all nuts and bolts are secured.
Eat and Drink Plenty
As always it’s important to eat properly before you exercise for any period of time and despite the colder weather you still need to keep re-hydrated, as you will sweat whilst riding. Good nutrition will help you to perform better during your exercise as well as recover faster afterward.
Riding style
This one may seem obvious but you should always adapt your cycling to fit the weather and conditions. Adjusting your speed accordingly, taking a safer or better lit route, checking the weather further in advance and letting someone know your plans before you head out are just some of the ways you can adapt your routine to remain safe.
